iPad Air's opening sales could top last year's 3M record

Apple could sell somewhere between 2.5 million and 3.5 million iPads in the opening weekend of iPad Air sales, says Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster.

The iPad Air is now on sale in just about all its launch locations, short of Hawaii where local stores have yet to open.
The consensus is that lines for the device are shorter in most places where more shoppers queued up for Apple's latest tablet a year ago.
That doesn't mean Apple won't surprise with higher sales numbers, says Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster, who on Friday told investors he thinks Apple will sell between 2.5 million and 3.5 million of the tablets over the weekend.
Even if Apple is on the higher end of that, it's a tough comparison to the 3 million the company sold over the same period last year. That included sales and preorders for both the fourth-generation iPad and the new iPad Mini. Making things even more complicated is the fact that both devices came just seven months after a completely different, standalone launch for the third-generation iPad.

This time around, it's just the iPad Air, while there's a wait for the second-generation model of the iPad Mini, which sports a Retina Display and costs $100 less for each of its models. Apple has not yet announced a release date for the device, short of saying it's coming later this month.
One other consideration: This is Apple's biggest launch for a tablet yet, at 42 countries -- a list that includes (like the iPhone 5C and 5S) China. Last year's iPad Mini and fourth-generation iPad launch initially targeted 27 countries, while the third-generation model launched in just 10.
As for Munster's track record on recent launch day estimates, he pegged the iPhone 5S and 5C launch at between 5 million and 6 million phones. Apple later reported sales of 9 million, though did not distinguish whether those units were sold to consumers or if they included inventory sold to retailers.
Apple is expected to offer up its own number early Monday, though could stay mum considering the new Mini is not yet on sale. Despite that, the company is still selling several other older models like last year's iPad Mini for $299, and the 2011 iPad 2 for $399, enough to keep the total number a bit of a mystery.

Apples iOS boss quits after 23 years Apples iOS boss quits after 23 years
According to his LinkedIn profile, Henri is no longer an employee at Apple where he worked as a software engineer before being shifted to the iOS division in 2015 where he served as vice president of engineering until his retirement last week.
Mr. Lamiraux apperaed in many WWDC events during his stay at Apple, getting popular with App Store app developers in 2012.
It is not clear why Henri Lamiraux left Apple but we can confirm that Apple has also ted work on the iOS 8, without Lamiraux ofcourse.
Meanwhile, in another news, Apple legend Steve Wozniak said he wished Apple and Google were partners.
“Sometimes I say ‘Go to Joe’s Diner’ and (Siri) doesn’t know where Joe’s Diner is. And very often usually I find out that Android does.
“I believe you should have a world where you’ve got to license something at a fair price. There are good things I see on Samsung phones that I wish were in my iPhone. I wish Apple would use them and could use them, and I don’t know if Samsung would stop us.
“For about three or four years I’ve been talking about organic LED displays that could be theoretically printed on plastic, wrapped and folded. It could be on the inside of your arm and then when you flip your arm up it could actually flip open into your own hand. I want a full smartphone-like capability on my wrist. The trouble is the more I think about it, I don’t want the small size.”
Wozniak later admitted that he doesn’t know much about the business issues which could prevent such an Apple-Google partnership from happening.

Back in the 1970s, Steve Jobs met Steve Wozniak, and the rest, if you like, is history.

The two became firm friends and although Steve Jobs often gets the credit for Apple's success, it was Woz, as he's known, who was the brains behind the silicon.

He spoke to the BBC's technology programme Click.

Apple-Google partnership
Computers are on the verge of understanding human gestures and speech, but it has not yet been perfected. Wozniak says he often finds Android human speech recognition software is more accurate than Apple's Siri.

"Sometimes I say 'Go to Joe's Diner' and [Siri] doesn't know where Joe's Diner is. And very often usually I find out that Android does."

Wozniak says this is due to Android's access to Google's search engine.

"That is actually the future of intelligence probably for computers getting smarter and getting artificial intelligence. I wish to God that Apple and Google were partners in the future."

But how likely would a partnership between the two companies be?

"I don't know. If I were there, it would be pretty likely. I'm probably wrong, there's probably an awful lot I don't know about the business concerns and one thing you've got to remember is a company has always got to make money," says Wozniak.

Encouraging openness and sharing information and methods would benefit everyone to develop the best technology, Wozniak says.

"I believe you should have a world where you've got to license something at a fair price. There are good things I see on Samsung phones that I wish were in my iPhone. I wish Apple would use them and could use them, and I don't know if Samsung would stop us," he says.

"I wish everybody just did a lot of cross-licensing and sharing the good technology, all our products would be better, we'd go further. I do wish they were more compatible."

Better gadgets
Wozniak believes more sharing between companies would lead to developments in bigger and better technology in wearable tech, like smartwatches and augmented reality glasses.

"I want a full smartphone-like capability on my wrist. The trouble is the more I think about it, I don't want the small size.

"We're just at the verge of having products that have foldability and flexibility," he says.

"For about three or four years I've been talking about organic LED displays that could be theoretically printed on plastic, wrapped and folded," he says.

Steve Wozniak tells Click how realistic he thinks he has been portrayed has been in films.
"But think outside of the box. It could be on the inside of your arm and then when you flip your arm up it could actually flip open into your own hand."

Despite his legacy, Wozniak is not seen as an Apple insider these days. But he is still beloved by many of the Mac faithful.

"His comments aren't influential in any shape or form. He was one of the founders of Apple and walked away, so the fan boys love him. He is free to say anything he likes," says Stuart Miles, founder of technology news website Pocket-lint.

"I don't think he has any insight or influence into the inner workings of how Apple works. But nonetheless he is a fascinating storyteller," he says.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak won’t be buying an iPad Air

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak says he won't be getting an iPad Air because 128GB of storage space just won't cut it

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak says he probably won’t be buying an iPad Air, because he’s a prolific traveller with a sitcom addiction, and needs more than the Air’s maximum 128GB of storage space.

“The iPads didn’t hit my needs - yes, they’re lighter and thinner and they’re guaranteed great sales from day one. But 128GB of storage - I don’t have broadband at home (thanks to America’s monopolised broadband system, Wozniak is one of the 40% of Americans left without the good wired internet connection most Europeans take for granted), and you can’t get a great broadband connection in hotels, so I carry a lot of my personal media. I was hoping for more storage, so I could put every episode of Big Bang Theory on my iPad. So I emailed my wife and said ‘nope, don’t want one of those’.”

Wozniak, who was speaking this morning at Apps World in London, also said he found the iPad Mini “just a hair too large” and said he’d like to see an iPhone with a bigger screen, saying bigger screens were “easier to deal with”, and offered “more space for your fingers”. “They [Apple] increased the size,” he said, “but they increased it in one dimension only. When you went into a store and saw the iPhone had the smallest screen of all, that was a little disappointing.” The Woz spoke highly of Android phones, particularly the Galaxy Note 3, the HTC One and the Galaxy S4, and confirmed that he, like everyone else, never uses the Stocks app on iOS.

We're inclined to take The Woz's comments with a pinch of salt, though: as the original Apple fanboy, he's known for buying his Apple gizmos in-store, sometimes queuing up with fellow devotees. He makes a good point about stingy storage, but the world's greatest gadget fan is unlikely to be able to keep his hands off what many see as the world's greatest gadget. Also, doesn't he get sent one for free?

Apple Offering 'Free' Updates to All Owners of Aperture, iWork, and iLife; Not Worried About Unethical Users

As part of its efforts to ensure that all eligible software owners are able to upgrade to the latest versions of its software on the Mac App Store, Apple is intentionally allowing users with any version of Aperture, iLife and iWork installed on their system to upgrade to the latest versions on the Mac App Store -- even illegally acquired or trial versions.

In order to ensure that no legitimate software owners are left behind, according to MacTrast, Apple has eliminated its legacy software update mechanism entirely and is instead pushing all software updates onto the Mac App Store.

According to a MacTrast source at Apple:
It’s no coincidence that Apple’s support site doesn’t have downloads for the new Aperture, iWork, and iLife updates. They aren’t in our Software Update system either – and there’s a good reason for that. With Mavericks, we have changed the way we distribute updates for legacy versions of our apps

Rather than maintain separate updates for these in addition to the Mac App Store versions of each app, Apple has decided to eliminate their legacy software update system for apps entirely. Instead, when Mavericks discovers legacy apps installed on your Mac, it provisions them as a Mac App Store purchase using your Apple ID. It saves us a lot of time, effort, and bandwidth. After the provision is complete, it will appear in your Mac App Store history as though you have purchased the Mac App Store version of the app.

While we are aware that this enables piracy of our apps for unethical users, Apple has never taken a strong stance or action against piracy in the past. We like to believe that our users are honest, even if that belief is in vain.
When the new apps were released on the Mac App Store, many users with legitimate copies were unable to upgrade to the latest versions, though many users who were having difficulties seem to be able to upgrade now.

As a result of Apple's changes, all users with older versions of Aperture, iWork or iLife installed -- even if acquired through less-than-ethical means -- should be able to upgrade to the latest versions through the Mac App Store.

Apple Stores begin stocking space gray first-gen iPad mini

Following an announcement that it would be replacing the black and slate first-generation iPad mini with a space gray version, Apple on Thursday began stocking the device at select brick-and-mortar stores.

iPad mini

Alongside Apple's unveiling of the iPad mini with Retina display, the company announced that it would be replacing the black and slate first-gen unit with a space gray version. It appears that these devices are now trickling out to Apple Stores in the U.S., though on a limited basis.

AppleInsider was able to confirm that some larger stores had the devices in stock earlier in the day, but quickly sold out of the initial batch.

Apple first introduced space gray as a replacement for the outgoing "black and slate" color option when the iPhone 5s debuted in September. The lighter gun metal-esque finish has replaced black for almost all iOS products, save for the iPod classic.

Along with the new hue, Apple dropped the original iPad mini's price tag to $299, as the device is now the company's entry-level 7.9-inch tablet. Like the iPad 2, the first-gen mini is being offered in two variations, 16GB with Wi-Fi and 16GB with Wi-Fi + Cellular.

As seen above, the Apple Online Store is showing in-stock status of the space gray non-Retina mini, and the tablet should be shipping out to resellers in the near future. AppleInsider will have a full list of availability in the Price Guide as the new color option hits store shelves.

Samsung Galaxy S3 outpaces iPhone 5S, 5C in touch accuracy

The Samsung Galaxy S3 performed notably better than Apple's latest handsets in terms of overall screen accuracy, according to a new study.

Apple's iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C have a bit of improving to do on the touch-accuracy front, according to new data from OptoFidelity, a Finland-based tech test and measurement company.
OptoFidelity said that it used its own Touch Panel Performance Tester to measure the iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S, and Samsung Galaxy S3. The device uses a robot to "touch" exact coordinates on a screen. It then measures the coordinates of the touch device to see how closely they matched.

According to the data (PDF), the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C had significant fail rates, especially around the edges and toward the top of their displays. The Samsung Galaxy S3, meanwhile, was largely accurate across the middle of the screen, but had errors around the edges.
From there, OptoFidelity turned its attention to the virtual keyboard on the three devices and again found that Samsung's device is far more accurate in its response to touch inputs.
"Because the touch accuracy is more even in Galaxy S3 than in iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, you get a lot less typing errors, and letters which are close to the edge are working better," OptoFidelity said in its report. "You can also test this by tapping letters on the edge and typing long text messages."
OptoFidelity didn't say why it didn't include the Galaxy S4 in its study.
