Focal Camera App Gets Divorced from CM and is Now Available at Google Play Store

Focal Camera App Gets Divorced from CM and is Now Available at Google Play Store

Focal-Camera-App

As you might already be knowing, CyanogenMod will no longer be an open source aftermarket custom ROM for Android. The “great minds” behind it have now decided to get the CM environment to close it for independent developers by gettings its codes licensed. The father (CM) is now up to follow his son’s (MIUI) path. Founded by a few, but nourished by many talented developers of the Android community, one of the most popular AOSP-based ROMs will not be as we have known it for years now.

If you have been using the Android 4.2.3 based CM 10.2 Nightlies for some time, you must be familiar with the new introduced Focal camera app. Since Google’s PhotoSphere camera feature was closed source, the camera app found on all ASOP based ROMs CM, PA and AOKP did not come with it. To cater to this appetite, well-known developer XpLoDWilD came with a new app called Focal Camera that was integrated in the CM 10.2 Nightlies a couple of months back. This camera app, featuring the photosphere similar to those found on Nexus devices, was only available exclusively for CM users so far. However, some dramatic events have took a surprising, a little shocking too, turn and forced the developer to pull out his camera app from CyanogenMod.

If you are curious about the “focal drama” that took place behind the scenes, do not miss to read the interesting episode here. Anyway, the bright side of the thing is that the Focal camera app has now made its way to the Google Play Store and thus it is available for all users now who have a device with Android 4.1 and above.

Focal has a very plain user interface that is pretty similar to the camera  app found on stock Android. It is loaded with some most coveted camera features like—

PicSphere (Photosphere)
HDR
Burst mode, timer mode, scene mode, shutter speed, etc.
Double tap to quick capture
Spot metering

This open source camera app also has device specific features that show only on specific devices. Focal is still in beta state and therefore you should not expect perfection from it. I have been using it for a couple of days and based on my experience I can say that it is a promising app that deserves a shot. If you love Photosphere and HDR, you’ll surely love it.

TouchPal X Keyboard to Android Free App Brings Easy & Speedy Gesture Typing

TouchPal X Keyboard Brings Easy & Speedy Gesture Typing to Android (Free App)

Calling and texting have been the most typical features of mobile devices since the beginning. Just a few years back, we used to type contact names, messages and web URLs on hard keypads. That method of text input was really annoying as we had to press a key several times to get the desired alphabet or number, but we were used to it. With the advent of touchscreen devices, the hard keys were replace by virtual keypads that just required tapping. The new thing was less painful indeed! Later, we were introduced to the Swype input method requiring dragging you finger tip over the QWERTY keypad buttons.

Due to smartphones’ screen width, we get very small buttons in QWERTY mode and it often results in blunders while typing test on phones. With that being the reality, the word prediction and Swype techniques have really revolutionized the way we type on phones. I do not say that it is as easy and fast as we experience on a computer’s keyboard but it is still better that any input method available today.

Even Swyping does not eliminate the chances of mistake that might bring hilarious situations and put us in catastrophic state. If you just look for keyboard input apps at the Play Store, you can get hundreds of apps, free and paid both. Personally, I like SwiftKey Keyboard most. However, since I came across another input alterative app, I feel that my liking has shifted to it.

touchpal-x-keyboard-android

The new TouchPal X  app is probably the best keyboard input solution for Android I have seen so far. My verdict is based on the comparisons among some of the most known keyboard apps. I have been using it for 2 days now and it feels really exciting when it comes to typing experience. It ensures correct typing with lot more faster speed than you might be used with normal keyboard. The app uses Curve input method that uses refined gesture dragging paradigm as Swype but adds better flow to it and makes typing intuitive.

Then, there is another text input method called Wave – Sentence gesture that employs a smarter form of word prediction as you start typing. When you see your desired word’s prediction, you just have to slide down to the word to confirm. You do not need to switch between Curve and Wave methods because you can do it by bringing a change in your gesture— drag across the letters to write in Curve mode, or start typing the desired words to use the Wave mode. Isn’t it simple?

Besides, TouchPal X Keyboard also has One-handed layout for easy typing for those who are not comfortable with QWERTY input. The app features some more amazing things as well. It supports themes which can be downloaded from the Themes option. It features quick access to symbols and Emoji emoticons through gestures. It supports about 70 most spoken languages. The T+ Dual letter input can prove convenient to many as it brings bigger letter buttons for easier typing.

The app also comes with TouchPal speed meter that shows you the statistics for all your typing adventures and achievements with this beautiful keyboard input app. We recommend you must try it! Download the free app from the Google Play store and start TouchPalling now!

Android Device Manager for Android a Perfect Security Solution

With growing importance of smartphones in our everyday lives, the need for a good security solution for our mobile devices is always felt. There was a time when the most serious concern with a lost or stolen phone used to the loss of contacts stored on it. But now, smartphones have grown into mini computers that also work as a personal vault where we keep our valuable data. The unauthorized used of our phones, in case of being lost or stolen, might put us in a problematic situation.

If you have been with us for some time,  you might be remembering we did a small article on the newly introduced Android Device Manager, back in early August. It was an initiative taken by Google to provide an inbuilt security solution to all Android devices. Since Android did not have a native remote device tracking and control feature so far, most of us were forced to go for some third-party apps that are available in the Play Store on free and paid basis. I, like many of you, was thrilled at the very news of the arrival of Android Device Manager, thinking the now service by Google for Android users will be an ultimate security solution.

Android Device Manager has finally started working, but the question still remains— does it really provide complete security if your phone or tablet device is lost or stolen? When we examined the feature last month, ADM offered only three options:  track location on Google Maps, wipe device data remotely, and ring the device. To be able to enjoy these features, all you need to do is to be signed in to your Google account on your phone or tablet and also on your computer.

I tested the remote control features provided by Android Device Manager on my HTC One and Galaxy S4 and it worked well. However, it must be admitted that just the three features offered by ADM are not enough to make you feel secure, especially if the device is stolen or found by someone not willing to return it back. ADM requires working data or WiFi connection to work and is completely useless if someone resets the devices with some other Gmail ID.

If you open the Google Settings app on your device, you should be able to see Android Device Manager listed there. While activating the app, you can see operations like “Change the screen-unlock password” and “Lock the screen”, but quite surprisingly the features do not work at the moment.

If these two options are provided on the ADM Website, Android Device Manager could then be called a nice remote security solution. And though these feature are not functional currently, there presence does promise that they will be available pretty soon. May be in the next update!
