Samsung extends the patent license agreement between Nokia and Samsung for five years; companies will enter into binding arbitration to settle the amount of additional compensation

Espoo, Finland - Nokia announced that Samsung has extended a patent license agreement between Nokia and Samsung for five years. The agreement would have expired at the end of 2013. According to the agreement, Samsung will pay additional compensation to Nokia for the period commencing from January 1, 2014 onwards, and the amount of such compensation shall be finally settled in a binding arbitration which is expected to be concluded during 2015.

"This extension and agreement to arbitrate represent a hallmark of constructive resolution of licensing disputes, and are expected to save significant transaction costs for both parties", said Paul Melin, Chief Intellectual Property Officer of Nokia.

Nokia will retain its industry-leading patent portfolio following the proposed transaction to sell substantially all of its Devices & Services business to Microsoft and sees further opportunity to create value by investing in innovation, and by actively managing its patent portfolio and licensing activities.

NSN, China Mobile Research Institute jointly shape tomorrow’s mobile broadband

Expand memorandum of understanding for research on key technologies

Nokia Solutions and Networks and China Mobile Research Institute (CMRI), the research and development branch of China Mobile, have expanded their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), originally signed in 2010. Under the terms of the renewed agreement, the two parties will further their cooperation on research and standardization of advanced mobile broadband technologies in LTE as well as in 5G. The MoU reflects their vision of 2020 and outlines key focus areas for future mobile networks.

As devices become more sophisticated, new applications evolve, and more data is required at higher speeds, the global demand for mobile broadband will continue to grow exponentially in the next decade. To meet this challenge, NSN and CMRI are again joining forces to develop innovative technologies. These will help mobile operators provide an unmatched personal gigabyte* experience. The parties agree to enhance joint research, standardization, and prototype development activities in advanced technologies such as 5G, LTE deployment optimization, cloud-based radio access network (C-RAN), the innovative “Nanocell” concept for next-generation small cell deployments, coexistence of 2G / 4G and core virtualization.

“Significant reduction of the unit cost of bandwidth is the key to success of future mobile networks,” said Bill Huang, General Manager of CMRI. “The alignment of NSN’s and CMRI’s technology vision on the future mobile networks is an important foundation for our long-term successful partnership. INNOTE FOR NOKIA LUMIA

InNote is one of the latest apps to make an appearance on the Windows Phone Store, and it’s ideally timed to take advantage of the latest big-screen Nokias like the Lumia 1520.

Along with the ability to add text, you can also doodle onscreen, create hand-written notes and add images, and it couldn’t be easier to use.

Perfect for bigger screens

The Nokia Lumia 1520 is the perfect smartphone to show off InNote, the latest note taking application for Windows Phone. With a huge screen, your notes can be more detailed, doodles more elaborate, and the additional space makes it easier to write freehand.

You can add notes in two different ways using InNote, either with the regular onscreen keyboard, or by scribbling on the display itself. Take the latter option and you’ll be able to choose from loads of different pens, including different tips – from a marker, to felt-tip, to quill and paintbrush – to a sliding bar for different size options.

You can also go through a vast colour palette, sliding your finger around to pick from different hues. Once you’ve selected your pen type and colour, you can get started, with a big ‘back’ button at the bottom of the display (along with a ‘forward’ button in case you change your mind) and the option to save your note at any point.

For more serious InNote users with the need to take down longer notes, clicking the text option bring up a text box to type in. You can change the size of the font, so you can give priority to specific text and make it more obvious on the screen. It’s even possible to add audio recordings to your note, with a small tool bar added to the top to let you record, stop and play new or older recordings.

Including your photographs

There’s a lot of scope to get creative with InNote, and we love the fact you can simply pick photographs from your Nokia’s gallery and add them to your note. You can resize and rotate images, so they’ll fit perfectly into your latest creation. Want to remember who you were with? Why you were there? What you were doing? Simply add the information to your note.

Setting up notebooks

The ability to add notes is nothing without being able to actually use or share them, however, which is where InNote’s Notebook feature comes in. Saving a note lets you create or choose a particular notebook to place your note in, and once saved you’ll be able to flick through all the items you’ve added.

Your notes don’t have to stay within InNote – you can pin important notes to your Start Screen, or share by every means from Bluetooth, to messaging, to email and social networks.

All-in-all, InNote is a truly useful app, and the versatility on offer when it comes to adding different types of content also makes it an entertaining app. If you’re in the market for a big-screen Lumia like the Nokia Lumia 1520, or you simply want a note taking app for your existing Nokia, it’s a great choice.

INSIDE STORY: THE 3.5 MONTHS UNDERWATER NOKIA LUMIA 800

Nokia devices have a long hard-as-nails history of being bashed, crashed and smashed, yet still surviving against the odds.

Just do a web for search Indestructible Nokia and you’ll see what we mean. Nevertheless, this is the first time we’ve heard of a Nokia Lumia surviving at the bottom of a lake. And not just for a few minutes, but for three and a half long months.

First shared on the Nokia Sweden Facebook page a week or so ago, this story has been around the Web and back again. Now, we’ve caught up with the man who performed the impossible, and salvaged this sunken Lumia treasure, to get the inside story. Put your hands together for fantastic fixer, Roger Nilsson.

Sweden is blessed with hundreds of beautiful lakes. Which one of these swallowed the Nokia Lumia 800 and how did it happen?

In May, a work friend of mine was sunbathing with her husband by Lake Ivösjön, which is the largest and deepest lake of Skåne in Sweden. Her Lumia 800 was laying on a towel and her husband didn’t see it when he picked it up, so the poor Nokia fell down the cliff and into the water. They tried to find it but no luck.

So, how was it found and how did it look when you saw it?

At the end of August another friend went snorkelling and Anna asked him to look for her phone at the same time. Amazingly, he found it 2 meters down. Anna brought the phone to me the next day and I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it. It was completely covered in algae, shells and brown stuff. I told Anna that this phone is dead but I’d have a go at it.

Was it tough to fix?

I started to clean the whole phone (it took almost 6 hours) and then I put it on a radiator to dry for about four days. I never opened it! On the fifth day I put the charger in it thinking either it will blackout my house or the charger would brake, but damn I was surprised when I saw Nokia on the screen and then the Windows Phone logo.

What was your reaction when it started to work again and how did seeing it spark into life make you feel about Nokia phones?

I called all my friends including Anna and she said, “Yeah, right. It’s not April 1st now!” But it was true. Everything works perfect, camera is good, and battery is perfect. The only little issue is that sometimes it wants to lower the volume by it self. I told all my friends that my next phone will be a Nokia and if I can afford it, one with that nice JBL PlayUp speaker that can charge the phone wireless. That would be a dream come true for me.

Needless to say, we love a happy ending here at Nokia Conversations, especially when it means we can add underwater survival to the plethora of indestructible Nokia stories we so regularly hear. That said, we definitely wouldn’t advise taking your phone for a dip.

STEPHEN ALVAREZ: “IT PERFORMS LIKE THEY SAID”

During Nokia World Abu Dhabi, we sat down with National Geographic photographer Stephen Alvarez to talk to him about his relationship with the Lumia 1020, and Nokia.

Alvarez is a charming man. Polite, calm and reassuring, he’s a professional in every measure. His pictures of course, speak for themselves. When I found out that we’d have the opportunity to spend some time with him at Nokia World, I decided to do some research in advance.

Keen to see what people thought of his Nokia Lumia 1020 project, I discovered that there were some doubts about the project, both from Alvarez and others. The best way to get to the bottom of it, I figured, was to ask the man himself. Alvarez himself expressed doubts at the end of one of the videos he produced. So I asked him what they were:

“I’ve done a lot of cellphone work and had seven or eight camera phones, two of which I’d tried to use professionally. One of those projects where I never want to see it again, because you’ve got to make excuses about your pictures. Nokia asked me about this and I said “sure”, thinking this can’t possibly be as good as what they are saying and then the phone arrives and it does everything it’s supposed to do.”

Those doubts, it seems, didn’t last very long “It performs like they said it would perform. Those doubts were based on my previous experiences with camera phones with small sensors and they couldn’t perform. This thing has a big sensor and it performs.”

The rate of progress in smartphone cameras is incredible. Even this year, first with the Nokia Lumia 1020 and now with the Nokia Lumia 1520, the world has changed immeasurably.

According to Alvarez “Nokia’s [progress] seems to be exponential, citing other phone manufacturers’ measure of smartphone camera progress as being better than its model’s previous generation which in his view “still makes it a pretty crappy camera”. Meanwhile, he compares the Lumia 1020 and Lumia 1520 favourably to his professional camera describing it as “a whole different ball park for comparison”.

Those comparisons do have limits though. With a high-end DSRL shooting seven frames per second, it’s reasonable to describe, as Alvarez does, the Nokia Lumia 1020 as “a little slow”. Lens selection is a different matter, something Alvarez’s pro camera offers but where the Lumia fall short. For now.

Could lens selection be overcome by technology? “You have the smartest people in the world working on this. I believe they will come up with a solution. I really do” is Alvarez’s take on it. It’d be a heck of a challenge, but given what’s been achieved so far, not beyond the realms of the imagination.

But what of Alvarez’s endorsement of Nokia products? One commenter on Imaging Resource suggested that should “a company pay the photographer and National Geographic enough money, they would shoot for ten days with a pinhole camera and rave about the results”. Alvarez’s response is simple:

“If you paid me enough money I would shoot with a pinhole camera but I wouldn’t pretend the images weren’t from a pinhole camera. I have a reputation. National Geographic has a reputation that has to live beyond this project. I can’t go out and say this is great and not be great. Well, I can, but I can’t expect to continue to work.”

He continues “Yes, I have kids to feed and you take the work that comes. However, the relationship wouldn’t have continued beyond me handing over the pictures”. In fact, the relationship has evolved and Alvarez is now a brand ambassador for Nokia’s imaging technology.

Alvarez moved from an iPhone to a Nokia Lumia 1020. The transition was, in his words “pretty easy”. The only apps that mattered to him were Expensify and Instagram. The latter will soon be taken care of by Instagram itself but for now Alvarez relies on 6tag. The former is already native on Windows Phone. Meanwhile the camera enables him to carry the Lumia 1020 like he used to carry his Leica M6 – as an “everyday camera capable of taking publishable pictures”.

It’s clear to anyone the impact that PureView technology has had in the last 12 months. But what if Alvarez, who’s a couple of years shy of his fiftieth birthday, had a Nokia Lumia 1020 when he started his career?

“Would I be the only one with a 1020?” Was his initial response, before explaining that if he were, he “would be like a space man.” Quite.

LINE COMES TO NOKIA LUMIA

LINE is a hugely popular messaging app that’s used by more than 260 million users in over 231 countries. It’s been available for Nokia Asha for a while now and you can now get it on your Nokia Lumia, too.

Downloading LINE costs nothing and you can grab it by scanning the QR code on the right of this page.

Registration

Once installed, the registration process is simple. Just add your phone number, email address (this is not essential but enables LINE use from a PC or Mac) and accept the terms of service and privacy policy and you’re in.

It’s worth pointing out that you have to be at least 13 years of age to use LINE, so you’ll need to agree to that, too.

To verify your new account, LINE will send you a code via SMS, which you’ll need to enter into the app to finalise registration.

LINE automatically populates your contact list to get you started. It does this by collecting the phone numbers stored on your phone (don’t worry, it’s all encrypted and secure) and finding registered members with those numbers.

Although, you can skip this part if you prefer.

Profile

With any account comes a profile and the need to personalise it. Personalisation is actually rather limited. Select a photo from either your photo gallery or by taking a new one directly from within the app.

You’ll need a name, of course, and also a user ID. Your profile name is what people will see what you’re chatting but it’s your user ID that’s important for allowing people to find you easily.

It’s no surprise that with over 260 million users, finding the one you want may now be a little tricky, but picking a user ID will make it easy for your friends to find you.

Features

LINE is all about communication, doing it in a fun and convenient way and by doing these things for free.

At its most basic level, it’s a messenger service where you can send text messages to one another.

If you want more, then add in some emoticons, attach photos, videos, audio messages, your location, and also add what LINE call ‘stickers’. These are essentially extremely large emoticons that convey a sense of fun that maybe words cannot.

If you get tired of texting messages to one another, simply press the on-screen phone icon to directly call the other person.

Because you connect to the LINE service through Wi-Fi or through your data plan it doesn’t cost you anything to send messages or make voice calls. Bonus! However, if you haven’t got a data plan of Wi-Fi, charges may apply.

LINE pushes notifications to a tile on your Start screen so you’ll never miss a conversation.

LINE runs on Nokia Lumia smartphones running Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 7.x, from the Nokia Lumia 800 to the Nokia Lumia 1020.

Samsung extends patent licensing agreement with Nokia for five years

Android might be free, but when a manufacturer wants to make an Android phone, it has to pay the price of a few patents that companies like Microsoft and Nokia have held for a few years; when you don’t pay that price officially, you get sued into oblivion by the likes of Apple and so many others. However, Nokia is one company that won’t be suing Samsung any time soon, as the two companies have renewed their patent license agreement for five years.

The original agreement will be expiring at the end of 2013, and for the new agreement Samsung will pay an undisclosed amount that will be decided after a binding arbitration concludes in 2015. “This extension and agreement to arbitrate represent a hallmark of constructive resolution of licensing disputes, and are expected to save significant transaction costs for both parties,” said Paul Melin, Nokia’s Chief Intellectual Property Officer.

Now, when can we expect Apple to start playing nice? Next year? The year after that? Or never? Any guesses?

Nokia became the fourth largest smartphone brand capturing a record high 4% market share

After years of struggle in one of the most premium and important smartphone market in the world, USA, Nokia is finally seeing its smartphone strategy and hard work bearing fruits. During Q3 2013, Nokia became the fourth largest smartphone brand capturing a record high 4% market share in a market which is a virtual duopoly dominated by Apple & Samsung.

According to our Market Monitor service, Apple & Samsung were in neck and neck capturing 33% market share each and together controlling almost two-thirds of the smartphone shipments during the pre-holiday season quarter. However, Apple led the market shipping slightly more iPhones than Samsung’s Galaxy range helped by the portfolio refresh with new iPhone 5s & 5c in September. iPhone 5s immediately became the best selling smartphone model in September . Meanwhile, LG maintained the third spot but saw its share dip slightly to 9% from 10% in Q2 2013.

On the other hand, the leading Windows Phone based smartphone manufacturer in the world, Nokia, captured the fourth spot for the first time since the iPhone launch, overtaking Motorola, HTC, BlackBerry, Huawei, ZTE & other brands. The key reason for this growth can be attributed to the big change in the Finnish vendor’s approach and go-to-market strategy towards selling its new phones in this highly operator-controlled US market compared to the less flexible attitude during the time when iPhone was launched. Nokia has thus in the last few years of post-Symbian transition has worked more closely with multiple operators offering them highly differentiated exclusive products with targeted and unique value propositions. This extra effort has helped Nokia steadily build its Lumia portfolio as well as win more shelf spaces at multiple carriers to reach at this inflection point.

to note, Nokia now has five Lumia models at AT&T and will add more (e.g. Lumia 1520), two models at Verizon Wireless, three models at T-Mobile and one model each at prepaid carriers - MetroPCS and Aio Wireless. Thus after a long time Nokia’s product portfolio looks broader,deeper and highly differentiated built by leveraging its head-turning design expertise, engineering experience, imaging, location, media assets along with Microsoft’sWindows Phone platform, services and support.

Lumia 520/521& 920 were the top-selling models this quarter for Nokia followed by contributions from Lumia 925 & Lumia 928 at T-Mobile/AT&T and Verizon respectively. Looking forward, with its entry into the premium tablet & phablet space with Lumia 1520 and uniquely positioned Lumia 2520, Nokia should see its premium portfolio growing and help drive marketshare, valueshare and mindshare in the US market.

IN THE FASTLANE WITH THE NOKIA ASHA 500, 502 AND 503

Fastlane is the second home screen on new Asha Platform models, offering a different, better way of interacting with your past, present and future on your phone.

It’s about personal experiences and actions, as opposed to just apps. Yannis Paniaras from Nokia Design explains the vision.

Past

“The user interface design team has been working on a new experience for Nokia Asha, a second home screen, since the summer of 2011.

“We wanted to create a different mental model for using your phone, something that is less application-centric and that creates a ‘melange of user actions’ displayed along a timeline; my today, my past, and my future. When we started, we called it the ‘activity screen’.

Fastlane was first showcased on the Asha 501 when it was launched earlier this year. But the roots of the project go back to the Nokia N9, which had three home screens: an app launcher, notifications and running apps.

“Fastlane gives owners much more of an impression that their phone is alive than the standard app launcher screen,” says Yannis. “It acts as a trail of my activities, but also gives a window on the future. so it’s a true reflection of what’s important to person using the phone.”

Present

Customers’ reactions to Fastlane have been very positive. “People find it convenient and fun. We needed to make it fairly simple to understand, since for many customers our Asha devices represent their first experience of a touch screen phone. But underneath the surface, there’s a lot more going on.”

Fastlane is always evolving. The latest version of the software, presented on the new Nokia Asha 500, 502 and 503 now allows for much greater customisation. You can selectively delete items from your Fastlane, and specify which types of content can appear on the stream. In addition, we’re showing even more content on Fastlane, such as items you share, and the likes and comments you get on those shares.

Elsewhere, we’ve added other refinements to the operating system. There is copy and paste, for example. It seems small thing, but in reality, a lot of people will appreciate this. The camera and gallery have been extensively reworked (look out for a dedicated article about this coming up soon), with one-swipe camera access, for example. We have also implemented ‘badging’ – showing the number of updates on the icons in the app launcher.

The software version that enables all these improvements to Fastlane and beyond will also be made available to owners of the Nokia Asha 501 through a software update.

Future

The team also has big plans for the future, which it recently mapped out at workshops in Brazil and Indonesia. At present, Nokia calls Fastlane a ‘secondary’ home screen, but of course it wants to be the first.

“You can make phone calls straight from Fastlane by clicking on the person. The old model of going to an app launcher screen, clicking on the icon, finding the person and then dialling is starting to seem overly hierarchical and old-fashioned,” says Yannis.

“At present, the ‘future’ section is largely about calendar appointments. But going forward, we’ve got plans to do more there. As more services get integrated, we can start to make suggestions based on what you’ve done in the past and provide recommendations about what to do or where to go.”

“There are many more services that we want to plug into Fastlane, and we’re opening up access for third-party developers to create their own Fastlane experiences.”

“It’s very much a team effort. Interaction designers creating the concept, then visual designers defining its appearance, marketing people testing it on customers and collating feedback and of course, our engineers making it happen.”
