(Tokyo, Japan): Japan Display Inc. (JDI), a global leader in mobile display technologies, has developed a 5.4-inch WQHD (1,440 x 2,560 pixels) TFT LCD module designed for smartphone use.
The display allows users to enjoy precise and dynamic images featuring the world's highest resolution density of 543ppi. The display's low temperature poly silicon (LTPS) technology not only enables low power consumption due to increased panel transmissivity, but also a thinner module and narrower dead-band2, which suits mobile-use devices like smartphones.
In addition, JDI has also developed another high-density (473ppi) 6.2-inch WQHD TFT LCD module for smartphone use.
We exhibit these displays in Japan Display Inc. booth on October 23 to 25, 2013, during FPD International 2013 in Pacifico Yokohama, Japan.

Japan Display Unveils A 5.4-inch Screen With The World’s Highest PPI For Smartphone Use

Back in 2011, the accepted resolution for flagship smartphones used to be 480 x 800. Then came a new generation of devices that introduced the 720p panels. These worked pretty well throughout the entirety of year 2012, until the HTC Butterfly / Droid DNA was launched, boasting the first 1920 x 1080 smartphone display. In parallel with higher screen resolution, it’s also no mystery that the size of most flagship phone’s displays has also increased gradually.

I guess what we’re trying to say is that technology moves forward, and you can safely bet that next year, the majority of flagship smartphones will have an even higher screen resolution than 1080p. In fact, Japan Display has just announced a new smartphone screen, boasting the highest pixel per inch count on a pretty large, phablet-worthy footprint. More details after the break.

Japan Display Unveils a New 5.4 inch Smartphone Screen

Japan Display has recently announced a new smartphone panel that measures 5.4 inches in diagonal, and boasts a resolution of 1440 x 2560, resulting in an unmatched pixel density of 543 pixels per inch. That’s the highest ppi count we’ve ever seen on a smartphone display, and it’s quite impressive.

The panel itself is a TFT LCD module that reportedly enables low power consumption thanks to the increased panel transitivity. It has a 1500:1 contrast ratio, and a 160 degree viewing angle (CR>100:1).

In case you’re not aware of this, Japan Display is a merged business that has been created back in 2011 by Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba, in conjunction with the “Innovation Network Corporation of Japan”. In other words, chances are that this beastly 5.4 inch WQHD (1440 x 2560) display will first see the light of day on a Sony smartphone.

We should also note that Japan Display has also lifted the veil on a different panel that boasts the same resolution, but clocks in at a lower pixel density (473 ppi) due to its larger, 6.2 inch footprint. Any thoughts?
