Highlights from IBC 2013

Hear the thoughts of international broadcasters, players in the media industry and Ericsson TV and Broadcast Services experts on IBC 2013.

As part of its drive to demonstrate how it is challenging, directing and setting the future of the TV agenda, at IBC 2013 Ericsson presented its entire range of pioneering game changing solutions, technologies and service models, which is taking video delivery and the television experience to new and exciting levels.

4K Ultra High Definition TV was one of the most important topics at this year’s IBC Show, an area in which Ericsson has played a pivotal part in building the ecosystem for live event delivery. Since Ericsson’s EBU demonstration back in February 2013 (featuring the AVP 2000 Contribution Encoders and corresponding RX8200 Modular Receivers), its technology has helped enable a number of rapid advancements, including outside UHD broadcasts, first using single cameras and more recently, multi-cameras.

At IBC, Ericsson took part in a joint demonstration alongside BT Group PLC, Sony, and Newtec, to produce the world’s first full multi-camera production of a sporting event, a rugby game between Saracens and Gloucester. The match, which was displayed live at the Ericsson show booth, was transmitted internationally via satellite and fiber in a 4:2:2, 10-bit resolution, 4K UHDTV signal at 60 frames per second.

Just prior to the show, Ericsson closed the acquisition of Microsoft’s Mediaroom business and TV solution. The Mediaroom acquisition represents a highly strategic addition to Ericsson’s multiscreen offering and with a combined IPTV software market share of around 25 percent, the company is now the world’s largest provider of IPTV middleware technology and solutions.

Ericsson also demonstrated the world’s first end-to LTE broadcast solution, combining three new standards (eMBMS, HEVC and MPEG-DASH technologies) to efficiently deliver premium content in LTE wireless networks. The company’s end-to-end LTE Broadcast Solution received ‘Best mobile TV technology or service’ at the CSI Awards, marking the third win for the solution in the last four months.

Rostelecom, Russia’s largest telecoms operator and leader in the country’s broadband and pay TV markets, announced its deployment of the world’s largest operator content delivery network (CDN), which will be enabled by Ericsson’s award-winning Media Delivery Network solution. The solution is uniquely designed to unite, accelerate and monetize the delivery of managed and unmanaged content over fixed and mobile networks.

And as part of a drive to offer an evolved services portfolio to broadcasters, Ericsson presented its new media management services. The managed services are set to advance broadcasters’ content preparation and playout capabilities and ensure efficient delivery of content to internet and mobile media devices in today’s fast evolving TV Anywhere environment.

Ericsson was active across the IBC Conference and was a lead sponsor of the IBC Leaders’ Summit, an exclusive invitation-only event, designed specifically for the most influential and visionary people in the electronic media, broadcast and entertainment industries. During the summit, Ericsson presented the findings of its 2013 ConsumerLab TV and Media report, as well as its vision for the future of the TV industry, based on its annual research into the trends, needs and habits of the digital consumer (representative of over 550 million people).

In the videos below you can hear some IBC reflections from key industry players such as Universal Music Nordics, TV4 and Ericsson Broadcast Services specialists. The videos also include thoughts on Ericsson’s pioneering 4K demonstration, the acquisition of Mediaroom and the latest ConsumerLab findings.
