Samsung shows off concepts for possible flexible display devices

After much rumors and speculation, a device with a flexible display was finally unveiled by Samsung in the Galaxy Round, followed by LG with the LG G Flex. However, while we were all expecting something similar to what we see in sci-fi movies, these devices don’t make much use of flexible displays, other than using them to curve the screen from a particular angle.
While curved screens do have advantages, it won’t be a few years before we actually see things like devices with displays that can be folded and/or curved in ways that a user sees fit, but Samsung has provided a look at what might be possible with flexible displays in the future, to the folks over at OLED.at. From a smartphone that can be folded and then fit in one’s wallet, to student desks with displays on top, it’s a nice peek at where Samsung might be looking to take flexible displays, though again, it will probably be a few years before these are realized in actual devices.

Samsung display concepts for flexible / rollable OLED display

Foldable / Transparent OLEDs enable many new products

Just a few days ago we gave you a detailed report created on the rapid growth of flexible OLED displays .
Nowadays we look one or even two / three steps into the future, the first easily bendable smartphones ( Galaxy Round , Flex ) are indeed on the market but these are flexible and non-rolling or folding like paper. Unfortunately we are still far from it, but Samsung display has sent us a document where the possibilities of this technology are presented.
We think these concepts will be possible only in the year 2016 to 2020 at the earliest. We think not so much but the display will be the problem of the power supply / battery.

Samsung Foldiplay concept

Let us look more closely at this concept, this is a device that Mulitfunktional foldable and transparent , and combines multiple devices into one.
The Foldiplay is 210x210mm in size and has a width of 2mm, the "great" thing about it is that you can fold it to a minimum of 70 × 70 mm.
As seen in the graph, you can display the desired wrinkles and has the option as part of the Smartphone, tablet PC, TV, DMB, e-book, newspaper, use camera.
And you can be as small folds that you can pack in your wallet even.
To realize this must have some hurdles are overcome, what is from there to the power?Battery? There are some flexible prototype but a fully foldable display is also available with today's plastic OLED technology is not yet possible. Nevertheless, it is interesting as Samsung LCD is the future and in which direction it will go. Source: Samsung LCD

Another idea or concept is called Book Write and roll out with a transparent OLED display ausgestattet.Man it can completely roll up, the main applications is an e-notepad, because it is transparent you can put it on a book or tasks and casually surf the web or investigate or solve problems or write.

The classroom of the future EDU Desk Desk

Well my school had already had such a desk, I would have much rather gone to school.
Samsung display to see the tables in the schools of the future. The table is actually a display that has transparent, high resolution, flexible, and 3D functionality. Students can actively different exercises at your desk desk-with-oled-displayor enjoy complete info / movies in 3D.

Goodbye Sticky. Hello Ara.

Over the last six months, our MAKEwithMOTO team took Sticky, a truck wrapped entirely in velcro and filled with rooted, hackable Motorola smartphones and high-end 3D printing equipment, across the country for a series of make-a-thons. On that trip we saw the first signs of a new, open hardware ecosystem made possible by advances in additive manufacturing and access to the powerful computational capabilities of modern smartphones. These included new devices and applications that we could never have imagined from inside our own labs. Open fuels innovation. See some examples herehere, and here.

After the trip, we asked ourselves, how do we bring the benefits of an open hardware ecosystem to 6 billion people?

Meet Ara.

Led by Motorola’s Advanced Technology and Projects group, Project Ara is developing a free, open hardware platform for creating highly modular smartphones. We want to do for hardware what the Android platform has done for software: create a vibrant third-party developer ecosystem, lower the barriers to entry, increase the pace of innovation, and substantially compress development timelines.

Our goal is to drive a more thoughtful, expressive, and open relationship between users, developers, and their phones. To give you the power to decide what your phone does, how it looks, where and what it’s made of, how much it costs, and how long you’ll keep it.

Here’s a sneak peek at early designs for Project Ara:



The design for Project Ara consists of what we call an endoskeleton (endo) and modules.  The endo is the structural frame that holds all the modules in place. A module can be anything, from a new application processor to a new display or keyboard, an extra battery, a pulse oximeter--or something not yet thought of!

We’ve been working on Project Ara for over a year. Recently, we met Dave Hakkens, the creator of Phonebloks. Turns out we share a common vision: to develop a phone platform that is modular, open, customizable, and made for the entire world. We’ve done deep technical work. Dave created a community. The power of open requires both.  So we will be working on Project Ara in the open, engaging with the Phonebloks community throughout our development process, as well as asking questions to our Project Ara research scouts (volunteers interested in helping us learn about how people make choices). In a few months, we will also send an invitation to developers to start creating modules for the Ara platform (to spice it up a bit, there might be prizes!). We anticipate an alpha release of the Module Developer’s Kit (MDK) sometime this winter.

So stay tuned. There will be a lot more coming from us in the next few months.
